It’s weekend – time to relax & unwind! Did you know that natural scents can help you to relieve stress and build new energy?
There’s actually scientific evidence for the effects of scents on mood and activity levels, for example from the fields of aromatherapy, pharmacology and psychology. Here’s where yogini meets researcher – I did some reviewing of the literature! These are the results of a quick scan (so correct me if you’re a professional aromatherapist):
– Lavender oil has a relaxing and soothing effect. It’s the most widely studied essential oil, and can be applied to reduce pain, anxiety and depression. But even if you don’t suffer from severe stress, a lavender oil bath or massage will help you to calm down.
– Blended scents of cedar, sandalwood and patchouli have a calming effect as well. That’s why these aromas are often used in meditation classes. The combination of those scents has a more powerful effect than either scent on its own.
– If you are looking for an energizing scent, try something fresh such as pine, lemongrass or peppermint to boost your energy level.
You can use those scents in a variety of ways, such as essential oils, air diffusers or scent sticks (such as in the picture, which I took when I visited Darjeeling on a blissful Sunday morning). Whatever you choose, close your eyes, take a deep breath and enjoy the sensation!
